A Prayer for Movement Renewal
(in the voice of Walter Brueggemann by Norm Dyck)
God of every exodus and every pentecost,
You who stir the waters and scatter the seeds,
We confess that the old wineskins no longer hold structures, have stiffened strategies, have soured…
But, You are steering.
Your Spirit still moves, hovering over the chaos calling forth creation.
And we hear your whisper in the wilderness, “Follow me.”
We feel your nudge in the noise – go to the margins.
We see your fingerprints on the fire of the faithful – those catalysts, those dreamers, those prophets, and planters – who live as if the Kingdom is now.
So call us again, O God, not to success, but to surrender.
Not to empire, but to movement.
Not to safety, but to the wild obedience of apostles, evangelists, shepherds, teachers, prophets risking their lives to reimagine your church – as body – as bride – as movement.
Give us courage to break rank, to step off the map, to walk with others into forgotten places where your gospel waits to rise again.
Let us not merely plant churches that cultivate ecosystems.
Let us not only teach, but embody the shared story, shared values, shared relationships to spark holy disruption.
We long to see the tracks of history shift.
We long to see the West remember the ways of Jesus.
We long to be part of the tipping point – small sparks, scattered light, united flame.
So breathe on us again. Ruach.
Make movement out of maintenance.
Make disciples out of consumers.
Make saints out of skeptics.
And when we grow tired… remind us that we are not alone.
And around the world your Spirit is stirring a global communion of the brave, the broken, the beautiful – bearing your name, carrying your mission, and longing… always longing for your Kingdom to come. Amen.
